This year, we had students from 26 counties across the island of Ireland discovering life-changing skills through the power of creative thinking. With 40% of participants coming from disadvantaged schools and a portion of these coming from Youthreach centres, LCA (Leaving Cert Applied) and from Northern Ireland schools, the impact was as diverse as it was inspiring. We joined forces with 223 brilliant mentors, 22 dynamic partners, and 6 trailblazing universities to empower young people with guidance, networks, expertise, and a fresh outlook on the future.
Now, as we wrap up 2024, let’s take a look at the top 10 B!G Idea moments that didn’t just pass us by – they rocked our world!
The Showcase is the highlight of our year every single time and 2024 raised the bar yet again! Mastercard generously hosted us, and what a day it was. Over 200 attendees, including 114 students from across Ireland, gathered for an immersive hybrid event. Hosted by TV’s Brendan Courtney, the day hit a high note with an inspiring fireside chat from keynote speaker Jack Kavanagh. Jack’s insights into mental well-being and inclusive workplaces left the audience inspired to use creativity for a brighter future.
In November, MSD Carlow welcomed ‘Team Sunny Sonics’ from St. Leo’s College, winners of the 2024 Climate Change Award. Their ingenious solar-powered mobile phone design wowed judges and demonstrated the incredible potential of sustainable, creative problem-solving. Bringing St Leo’s in to the MSD facility epitomises our mission at The B!G Idea, further bridging the gap between industry and education.
In April, we turned our focus to mastering the art of storytelling with Clare Murphy. Through questions like, When do you use story in your work? and What could you improve on? We found new ways to blend our ideas into one powerful story. It was a day of reflection and revelation that sparked creativity across the team.
This September, we expanded our programme to run from September to May alongside the traditional January start. Schools across the nation eagerly signed up to tackle global challenges and UN SDGs. This new phase marks an exciting leap forward as we work to bring the B!G Idea to every corner of Ireland.
The Student Accelerator returned with double the energy this year! Held at Autodesk’s super-cool Dublin offices, 61 students and 25 mentors joined forces for a day of innovation and skill-building. From prototyping with Mick Torrans of Mastercard to pitching like pros with Michelle Fogarty from LifeScientific, students shone on stage, wowing judges and mentors alike with their creativity and confidence.
This year, we debuted beautifully designed Partner and Mentor Impact Reports. These fabulous creations showcased the real difference mentors made, with data on the schools and students they inspired. The reports are a celebration of their invaluable contribution to our mission.
November 14 was a night to remember as we hosted our first-ever art sale in the enchanting Iveagh Gardens. Our Believers, Griffith College, lent us easels, and George Mealy worked his auction magic, raising an incredible €24,000! With 100 more masterpieces waiting for next year, there’s plenty more still to come.
As a remote team, our in-person gatherings are extra special. July’s strategy day in Carlow was followed by fun and games, while December brought us together for a day of festive cheer, complete with sparkly jumpers and heaps of holiday spirit. These days are special for the team and are a highlight on everyone’s calendar.
Through the Future Island-Island Project, we worked with communities, youth workers, and academics to reimagine sustainable tourism on Rathlin Island. Workshops led by Niamh and Siobhan brought fresh ideas and co-created programmes to life, paving the way for local and global impact.
This year, we proudly joined WorldSkills Day, highlighting the critical role of creativity and real-world skills. From construction to TV production, every industry present showcased the value of innovation. Our Head of Development, Niamh Cooney, joined an expert panel to discuss unlocking young people’s potential and creating pathways to success.
