The IDI Awards is one of those super glittery, fun events that is held every year and brings out the competitive edge in us all. This year because of you know what the awards have to be held online but that won’t stop us from getting excited. We are nominated for not one, not two, not three but FOUR awards this year and we could not be more proud. You might hear us screaming into our pillows with excitement and that’s only for being nominated…..just imagine if we won!!
The IDI hosts two awards annually, the Irish Design Awards and the Irish Graduate Design Awards. Both celebrate and reward the best of Irish design. The Awards are hotly contested and with the level of creative talent in the country, it is a remarkable achievement to be nominated.
The B!G Idea entered four different categories with successful nominations in each one: Design for Good; Design Education and Research; Collaborative and Universal Design.
Design for Good is a new design category to accommodate the growth of design for good. This award will go to a design project which has made the world a better place by addressing a need; the need met should bring about positive societal, political or environmental change. It’s not difficult to argue that The B!G Idea falls nicely into this category.
The Collaborative category is another one that we excel at. After all, The B!G Idea is the apotheosis of collaboration! This award will recognise an extended team of Mentors working together from different disciplines. Approaching a wicked problem with different perspectives can provide for remarkable success and The B!G Idea is all over this.
The Design Education and Research category encourages students to look at the role design plays in our changed world and its responsibilities. The judges are looking for entries that encourage engagement with the real world, demonstrating collaboration with industry, culture and society, raising awareness of the value of design. Another B!G tick for The B!G Idea here.
And finally, the Universal Design category. Universal design should be a fundamental consideration in design ensuring ease of access, understanding and use by a wide range of people regardless of age, size, ability or disability. Universal Design is included throughout the programme from lessons which focus on the Principles of UD to UD Case Studies communicating a design journey and a multitude of good Universal Design practice throughout. We also adopt a Universal Design for Learning approach to our lesson design and delivery, which makes the programme accessible to all learning styles.
So watch this space! We will be joining the online ceremony on November 11th at 7pm and you will be the first to know if we have any more success. For the moment though we are chuffed to bits to be nominated so many times. We know we have a B!G Idea but it’s wonderful to have it recognised in such worthy circles.
