Last week, The B!G Idea proudly took part in WorldSkills Ireland, where our Head of Development and Sustainability, Niamh Cooney, joined a panel of inspiring leaders to discuss how we can help young people unlock their full potential.

Creative Thinking Skills for the Future Workforce

The energy in the room was electric — clear proof that the future is bright. More importantly, it showed that together we can empower the next wave of creative thinkers. Throughout the day, we connected with young people, educators and industry leaders to spotlight the critical importance of creative thinking skills for the future workforce.

We also explored the power of Flearning (Failure + Learning = Flearning). Because growth doesn’t happen without experimentation.

These skills are not “nice-to-haves”. Instead, they are essential for today’s jobs and tomorrow’s careers. No matter what path young people choose, creative thinking and problem-solving will shape their success.

B!G Skills in Action

From construction and design to film and TV, the event demonstrated how creative thinking applies across every sector.

Live competitions brought this to life. Young participants tackled hands-on challenges in:

  • Wall building
  • Plastering
  • Cake design
  • TV and film model-making
  • Hairdressing
  • Live coding

The atmosphere was inspiring. Not only were technical abilities on display, but so were adaptability, innovation and collaboration. These are the real drivers of industry growth.

Skills for a Changing World

Today’s businesses face enormous challenges. Climate change, automation and the shift to a green economy demand new ways of thinking.

However, traditional education systems often struggle to embed creative problem-solving deeply enough.

That’s why global organisations are sounding the alarm. The World Economic Forum, LinkedIn and Forbes consistently rank creative thinking as one of the top skills required by 2025.

Our B!G Idea partners see this daily. Innovation is no longer optional. It is central to future-proofing every organisation.

Cross-Generational Upscaling Creative Thinking Skills for the Future Workforce

This is where The B!G Idea makes a difference.

Through our online mentoring programmes, we connect students with industry professionals. As a result, young people gain real-world insight while developing the creative thinking skills employers demand.

Whether students are exploring AI advancements, tackling sustainability challenges or engaging with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, they are learning to innovate with purpose.

At the same time, mentors benefit too. Cross-generational collaboration strengthens organisations and builds resilient teams.

Wider Economic Impact

Creative thinking skills for the future workforce align directly with national and international strategies.

Both WorldSkills Ireland and The B!G Idea support:

  • National Skills Strategy 2025
  • Action Plan for Apprenticeship
  • OECD education frameworks

Each of these initiatives focuses on lifelong learning, inclusivity and industry collaboration. By embedding creative thinking in education, we contribute directly to Ireland’s long-term economic resilience and competitiveness.
