We’ve been doing a bit of thinking at The B!G Idea HQ and we’ve come up with a new strain of B!G thinking.
Meet Solve. Our newest programme has been developed especially for young people in Youthreach and Community Training Centres (CTCs), taking the creative, collaborative spirit of The B!G Idea and shaping it around their needs, experiences and ambitions.
So, what’s the idea? Well, it starts with a problem.
Over nine sessions, young people work in small teams to explore a real-world challenge that matters to them. They investigate what’s going on, find out who is affected, come up with ideas, build a prototype, test it, get feedback and make it better. Solve is all about learning by doing, while developing six practical skills that are useful pretty much everywhere: critical thinking, communication, teamwork and collaboration, research, resilience and problem solving.
And just like the Think B!G porgramme, there’s a connection to the world beyond the classroom. At the midpoint, teams meet a real industry mentor who can ask questions, offer suggestions, share their experience and give learners a glimpse of where their skills could take them. The learners then decide what feedback to use and how to develop their idea.
There’s no one “right” way to take part either. You might be the researcher, builder, doodler, organiser, tester, talker or idea person. Everyone has something to bring to the table.
By the end, learners have created something together, discovered skills they didn’t know they had, celebrated their contribution and started thinking about where those skills could take them next.
Same B!G spirit. A new audience. A new challenge. And plenty of possibilities. Welcome to Solve.
